5. Summary and Suggestions

     5.1.  PURPOSES OF PRACTICUM

    In line with the crafted objectives of SEAMEO SEA-Teacher Project, I believe that its purpose had met my needs in terms of:

  1. Enabling and developing my teaching skills and pedagogy. My teaching skills and pedagogy have expanded by means of the trainings that I’d went through in Syiah Kuala University, particularly in SMA Laboratorium. During the program, I’d always challenged myself to prepare and think best strategies in teaching foreign students, it includes series of activities and instructional materials to be integrated, and even my presence in front of the students.

  2. Practicing and enhancing my English communication skills. Given that I do not know to communicate using Bahasa, I tend to enhance my second language which is the English. It was a satisfying feeling to give English instructions to students all the time. However, I am so happy that along my journey in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, I’d learnt some Bahasa and Acehnese language.

  3. Attaining broader regional and world view. The SEA-Teacher program allowed me to realize and experience the culture in a global context. I tend to indulge myself in the culture of Indonesia. As such, I learned to embrace and respect multicultural diversity which are worthy and vital in dealing to people whom I will come to meet and learn as I walk to the uncharted road called life and;

  4. Exposing to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and value of flexibility. The program does not only encompass to biology discipline. In fact, I was experienced teaching English and conversation class at senior high and even at international class in college of education. Other than that, I was able to experience varied opportunities such as exposing to research and even involved to International Conference in Mathematics, Science and Technology.

     5.2.  PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM

    The system or flow of practicum in Syiah Kuala University particularly in SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH was made in a well-organized programmed.  Such programmed was circulated into four major phases.

  1. Orientation meeting – This is the phase 1 of the program, the receiving university had accommodated us, the Filipino SEA-Teacher participants to their campus. This was the day that I’d also met and learnt Dra. Kemala Hayati, my cooperating teacher; Ms. Mimie Saputri, my direct supervisor from FKIP UNSYIAH; Ms. Astriet and Ms. Fera, supporting faculties in science department of SMA Labortorium; Ms. Wardiah and Dr. Andi Ufa, both lecturers in FKIP UNSYIAH and supervisors as well; Dr. Hasan, vice dean for academic affairs in UNSYIAH; and Dr. Usman, the Head Master in SMA Laboratorium.

  2. Familiarization of the Campus – This is the phase 2 of the program. After the Orientation meeting, Ms. Nurul Amali, our Indonesian buddy, had toured us in Syiah Kuala University, and SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH.

  3. Observation on classes – The phase 3 of the program had exposed me to educational systems and instructions in Indonesia particularly in Biology Education. I was observed classes in Biology class under supervision of Dra. Kemala Hayati. Likewise, I was also observed, Physics, Chemistry, English and conversation classes.

  4. Facilitating Learning: Guided Teaching – This next phase was guided teaching. In this activity, I was tasked to teach Plant Tissue at grade 11 science class. Likewise, I was also assigned to handle English and conversation classes at Grade 10, 11, and 12 both social and science classes.

  5. Facilitating Learning: Final and Independent Teaching – The fifth phase, or the Independent teaching, whereas, I was assigned to teach Viruses at X-IPA 2 class.

  6. Assessment and Evaluation - The last phase was the assessment and evaluation on my performance. In this phase, I was assessed and evaluated by my cooperating teacher and supervisor. The purpose of such was to figure out both my strengths and weaknesses in delivering instructions and likewise my whole performance and attitude along the duration of the internship.

     5.3.  OUTCOMES OF PRACTICUM

    I am so much glad that my practicum at SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH in Banda Aceh, Indonesia went all positive. I discovered new techniques in teaching, I learnt to embrace another culture, I'd improved my conceptual, technical and people skills, but this become all possible because of the never ending faith, love, care, guidance, and discipline that both my sending university and receiving university showered on me. More than that, the major outcome of the practicum is that, it let me realized to value everything, appreciate everything, and be more patience.

   Indeed, after all the hard worked I’d spent, I was happy to find out that my rating in practicum was 3.9375 or 99.94%. (See the given link: MyEvaluation_SEAMEO8). I considered this as a blessing for I learnt so much things in life and a challenge as well because I am now fully accepting the mission to be an educator. For me, numbers are just numbers, I believe that love, dedication, faith to others, and the passion to teach are the most essential elements over the ratings.

    One thing I can promise to SEAMEO SEA-Teacher is that, all the learning I gained during the practicum will be utilized accordingly.

   It’s always good to have feel such challenges in whatever undertaking we have to face. Challenges could build or break us. During my International Internship under SEA-Teacher project, I had encountered the following:

  1. Language barrier;

  2. Expectation of my mentors both from sending and receiving university.

  3. Contextualization of instruction in local and global setting

  4. Proper placing my technical skills in teaching foreign students in biology subject and even in English and Conversion class.

     Such challenges I’d encountered during my practicum in Indonesia help me become more resilient and capable of handling problems in teaching and even in handling people.

     5.4.  CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

     5.5.  OVERALL IMPRESSION

     My overall impression could not be easily expressed by saying “thank you”. The SEA- Teacher Program deserves to give 100 or perfect score. I am so much grateful that I became one of the participants of this program. Considering this as one of the great blessing I’d received along my journey in life. SEA-Teacher Project really touches my heart and soul. My perspective in teaching and life went all through positive because of such experienced. My teaching pedagogy improves a lot – far more than I deserved and expected.
