2. Pedagogical Content

This section entails the information about educational attributes and processes of my ever supportive and vibrant cooperating teacher – Dra. Kemala Hayati. Her skills and expertise in delivering instructions and managing class reflects in this segment. Likewise, the materials and innovation she had cast-off in teaching, the sources of learning and technology, and the authentic assessment she’d used in teaching and learning schema to assess the 21st century learners are being conversed in this area.

2.1.  TEACHING METHODS OF MY COOPERATING TEACHER

UNSYIAH Laboratorium provides wide-ranging learning materials and innovation for teaching and learning process. Specifically, it affords to have the students use microscope individually, books, pamphlets, overhead projectors, test booklets, brochures, audio, and video. For short, it manages to have multimedia learning materials and innovation. However, despite of such fortune, Dra. Kemala showcased herself as the primary material in teaching the students. Her passion and enough experienced in teaching made her capable of handling the class glowing. During her lessons, she used to have her students read the books and use models. Dra. Kemala’s talent and skill in drawing made her more effective in teaching. Throughout my observations, she caters the class by means of her unique styles of activities and tasks. Dra Kemala utilizes the white board for instructions accordingly. She has a well-modulated and command of voice which makes the students listen, participate and learn.

The major source of learning and technology of UNSYIAH Laboratorium is the Library. Textbooks and manuals are essential in transferring the knowledge from one student to another. Other than that, the school foundation of wisdom is the quality service being given by the competent teachers and the upright uses of laboratories equipment and facilities such as microscopes, computers, laboratory apparatuses, compound chemicals (for experimentation), and the like.

Assessment is crucial in determining the learning progress of the students. There are many types of assessment could be given to students to measure its aptitude. Teachers in UNSYIAH Laboratorium particularly my cooperating teacher – Dra. Kemala had used to float comprehensive assessment. Comprehensive assessment means that she touches the three learning domains of the students such as the cognitive(mind), psychomotor(skills), and affective(heart) domains.

How does Dra. Kemala Hayati drifted the glowing assessment technique? Based on my observations and conversation with her (to validate my observations). She prepared and executed the assessment according to the following:

2.4.a.  Under Cognitive Domain

  1. Learning objectives – Dra Kemala, make sure that the assessment is aligned to the learning competencies set on the learning objectives.

  2. Level of the learners – Dra. Kemala make sure that the assessment could understand by the student according to their grade level.

  3. Varied mind testing – Dra. Kemala use to have an assessment in different ways. One assessment is usually composed of two to three types such as multiple choice, essay, or identification. Hereof, she assures that her students will utilize not only the Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) but also the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).

2.4.b.  Under Psychomotor Domain

  1. Ability of the Students to Perform the task – Dra Kemala has always see to it that her students will perform a task to produce product. She used laboratory activity on which her students will discover the hidden treasure on the topic. Example of which are the mini-experiment or simple research on which the student will produce an original output based on the lesson. Sometimes, she allows the students to make reflection and reaction papers regarding the subject matter.

2.4.c.  Under Affective Domain

  1. Self-assessment Principle – Dra. Kemala floats questionnaire that will determine the attitude and behavior of the students about their study on the specific topic or on the given real scheme. This questionnaire requires to answer with honesty and integrity because it assess the student’s characteristics and personhood. It is a questionnaire which use scales in response such as Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree, and the like.

  2. The student’s response on the given instructions – Along the discussion, Dra. Kemala assess the student’s behavior and attitudes towards learning. During discussion or even in a group activity she evaluates the students according to its response on her instructions, its manner, its action, and even the facial expression and tone of voice.

Therefore, given the set standards, I can say that Dra. Kemala has the wide range in giving          authentic assessment to her students. She assures that all students should learn and assess holistically.

  • Most of the teachers in UNSYIAH Laboratorium are not strict, they allow the students to have excuses, this is because they believe that students will always learn for their own mistakes. If the students did not catch up the lesson, then, the students must have to face the consequences for his or her tardiness and excuses in class.

  • Weekdays are for academic matters while Saturdays are for extracurricular and fun day. I was amazed that UNSYIAH Laboratorium has this kind of integration in their curriculum. Weekend like Saturday serves as an avenue to all students have fun and enjoy after the tiring academic matters during weekdays. Other than that, these extracurricular activities make the students-teachers-and-employees relationship much stronger. As a result, students attain conducive learning environment.

  • Students in UNSYIAH Laboratorium possess respect to one another. They execute good attitudes toward teachers and co-students.

  • Teachers have few teaching loads, as a result, they have much time to prepare the lessons, documents and other materials for teaching.

Dra. Kemala Hayati is a Biological Science teacher in High School Laboratorium of Syiah Kuala University.  Most of the teacher in the department called her as the legendary science teacher in the school. She used to handle Science classes (IPA classes) in Grades 10, 11, and 12 for almost 36 years. For such reason, I tend to love her way of teaching.

During my 1-month international internship in High School Laboratorium UNSYIAH, I’d observed that she delivers and manages the classes in commendable ways. Dra. Kemala, uses traditional method of teaching with a twists. She makes sure that during her discussion, all students are paying attention at her. She floats questions in a class which lead to utilize not only the LOTS but also the HOTS of the students. Moreover, she respects and embrace the learner’s diversity as she gave many examples in different perspective.

Dra. Kemala, really masters her content in teaching; she has an ability to integrate subject matter to the broad aspects of the topic under discussion. Her method of teaching is very organized in a way how she frames learning objectives, delivering lessons, implementing learning activities in a class, and assessing the students’ learning progress. Likewise, she linkage subject matter with the social thrust of the school. But more than that, she used to integrate values in the lesson.

During my observations in her class, she used blended learning method because she combines discussion method, inquiry-based, discovery learning, and comprehensive feed backing system in a classroom setting, as a result; the students’ participation became lively throughout the lesson.
