A. Brief History

After the earthquake and tsunami that hit most of the coastal areas of NAD Province on December 26, 2004, USINDO (The United States Indonesia Society), the Indonesian American community, built a Model High School for Aceh called UNSYIAH Laboratory High School, better known as SMA Labschool Unsyiah.
The school was inaugurated on July 27, 2007 by Chancellor Unsyiah, Chair of BRR NIAS, and Joint Chair of US-Indonesia (USINDO) Edward Masters and Arifin Siregar. This school was designed by architect Unsyiah, a large room with very natural light and air, a science laboratory, a computer laboratory, and a language laboratory and a versatile library and auditorium. On June 5, 2007 the Provincial Government of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Education Office issued

operational licenses for Syiah Kuala University High School Laboratory Number 421.3 / E.1 / 1347/2007 based on:

1.3. TEACHING SYSTEM

The teaching system in SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH from Tuesdays to Fridays start at 7:30 AM up to 1:00 PM then resumes at 2:00 PM until 4:15 PM. On the other hand, during Mondays the class starts after the Indonesia Flag ceremony which last around 30-40 minutes. Thus, the usual lesson on the morning starts around 8:30 AM then follows the same routine for Tuesdays to Fridays. Every day, the students take three to four subjects, this asserts that the students are not bombarded with the lesson in a day due to minimal number of lessons to study. During Saturday, the SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH have their half day extracurricular activities, wherein the students and teachers and even the non-teaching staff had their time to play sports together, such sports are basketball, futsal, archery, and badminton. Other than that, those students who don’t love sports are allowed to join on academic organizations such as science and mathematics forum.

Moreover, during my observations in some classes, I’d observed that teachers are always guided with their lesson. They come to class prepared to sustain the individual needs of the students as they also exercise student-centered-approach.

1.4. SCHOOL FACILITIES: MATERIALS AND LEARNING RESOURCES

Facilities and infrastructure at UNSYIAH Laboratory High School are the following:

       1. Library
       2. Computer Laboratory connected to the Internet and networks
       3. Science Laboratory
       4. Full Area Hotspots in each Room and Park
       5. Available Server Hosting websites for Teachers and Students
       6. Canteen
       7. Student Locker
       8. Multimedia room
       9. Sports Field (Basketball, Futsal, Badminton, Table Tennis)
      10. Conducive school lobby
      11. Comfortable Classroom (9 × 12 M ^ 2) equipped with LCD Projector and Speaker
      12. Clinic Room
      13. And there are many other facilities.

1.5. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION SYSTEM

1.6. CURRICULUM

Assessment and evaluation system to the students of SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH primarily focuses on cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. In cognitive domain, the teacher prepares paper-and-pencil-test to evaluate the intellectual learning of students, usually this kind of assessment are in the form of multiple choice, modified true or false, matching type, explanation. Moreover, the skills of the students typically evaluated through laboratory experiments, action researches, reporting, problem-solving, and panel discussion depending on the lesson and/or subject matter had been discussed. And lastly, the affective domain of the students commonly assessed by means of their habitual responses to the teacher’s instructions, their action towards solving a problem and/or tasks, and their attitude during the lesson of the teacher.

The curriculum content of SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH is anchored to K-13 curriculum of Indonesia, where as the instructions are not only focused on the knowledge and skills of learners but at the same time on the values and character. Likewise, subjects of students to be taught are distributed according to their field of interests and specializations such as social class and science class. In social class, students are being exposed to human development skills, cultural engagement, communication skills, arts, politics, nationhood, and the like; while on the science class, students are uncovered to scientific researches, industrial development, data processing, technological advancement and others.

You can check more information on the link: https://www.scholaro.com/pro/Countries/indonesia/Education-System. Likewise, given below are the curriculum for social class and science class at SMA Laboratorium UNSYIAH in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

1.7. TEACHING PLAN

Teaching plan in biology and other science subjects usually uncover or deliver in a one to two sessions per week. Thus, the teacher’s assigned on such, usually make a lesson plan for twice in a week. Respectively, the teaching plan is anchored not only to the k-13 curriculum but also to the availability of resources. In the case of SMA UNSYIAH, teaching biology is not quite hard because the ratio of facilities in laboratory is 1:1, this is evident when I visited the lesson proper of Ms. Fera (Biology Educator in SMA UNSYIAH) allowing her students to use microscope individually. Likewise, in terms of technical planning, the teacher usually starts its lesson through activity session associated to the topic on which the attention of the learners will be captivated, after such activity, the teacher starts to discussed the lesson having a feedback system during the discussion process. Then, assessment follows after the teacher and students conformed that there is no more questions on the topic.
